How do you know your ad campaign worked? The metrics that really matter

How do you measure ad campaign success? Learn which metrics really matter for your goal, which numbers mislead you, and how to read results and decide the next step.

The short answer: an ad campaign works when it achieves the goal it was set for, at a cost you can afford. So do not start by looking at likes and views. First ask: what action did I want from people? A message, an order, a visit or a purchase? Then measure how many of this action you got and how much each one cost you, and compare that with what comes back to your business. If you want someone to follow your campaigns and give you a clear report, see our social media advertising service.

Start from the goal, not from the numbers

The biggest mistake in measuring campaigns is to open the results dashboard, look at any big number and judge by it. Ad dashboards are full of numbers, and many of them are correct but do not serve your decision.

The safer approach:

  1. Set the goal in one sentence before the launch.
  2. Choose one or two main indicators that express the goal.
  3. Treat the rest of the numbers as supporting indicators that explain why the main indicator went up or down.

To make sure you started with a clear goal, review How do you start a paid ad on Facebook and Instagram.

Indicators by goal

If your goal is to make your business known

Your main indicators:

  • Reach: how many different people saw your ad.
  • Impressions: how many times the ad was shown. Comparing it with reach tells you how many times the same person saw the ad.
  • New followers or page visits: have people started to get to know your brand?

Here do not expect direct sales. The aim is for people to know you, and they may need time before they buy.

If your goal is messages and contact

Your main indicators:

  • The number of new conversations that started from the ad.
  • The cost of one conversation: the total you spent divided by the number of conversations.
  • The quality of conversations: how many are from a serious person, and how many are curiosity or a question unrelated to buying.

Quality matters here. A campaign that brings many messages from people who are not serious is weaker than a campaign that brings fewer messages, most of them real.

If your goal is visits to the website or shop

Your main indicators:

  • The number of clicks on the ad.
  • The cost of one click.
  • What the visitor does after entering: do they stay and browse, or leave immediately? If they leave immediately, the problem may be the page, not the ad.

If your goal is sales or orders

Your main indicators:

  • The number of orders or purchases that came from the campaign.
  • The cost of one order.
  • Return on spend: how much sales came in against what you spent on the ad.

Return is the final indicator that matters to any business. But do not calculate it from the ad's sales alone without taking into account the cost of the product and of running the business. An ad that brings many sales at a narrow profit margin may not be worthwhile.

Numbers that may mislead you

Some numbers look like an achievement but do not necessarily show success:

  • Likes and views alone: nice, but they may not be linked to any sales. A person liking the picture does not mean they are a customer.
  • A large reach number: if the reach is to an unsuitable audience, it is spending with no benefit.
  • A low cost per click: cheap clicks from people who do not buy are more expensive than costlier clicks from people who buy.
  • A rise in followers: it may come from an ad about a gift or a contest unrelated to your business.

The rule: for every number, ask "What does it mean for my business?" If you find no answer, it is a supporting indicator, not a main one.

Beyond the ad: measuring outside the platform dashboard

Many sales do not appear in the ads dashboard. A customer may see your ad, then call you, visit the shop or message you on WhatsApp. So do not settle for what the platform shows. Some practical ways:

  • Ask every new customer: "How did you hear about us?" and record the answer. A simple way that gives you a picture close to reality.
  • Record messages and orders in a simple file or table: the date, the source, and whether it turned into a sale.
  • Use an offer specific to the ad: a secret word or a code that the customer mentions, so you know which sales came from the ad.
  • Use tracking tools if you have a website or online shop, to know what the visitor does after the click. These tools need correct setup, which is something handled by specialists in website development and design and ads.

How do you read the results and decide the next step?

After you collect the numbers, ask three questions:

  1. Did it reach the goal? If yes, is the cost acceptable for your business?
  2. Where did the audience drop off? Picture the customer's journey: they saw the ad, then clicked, then entered, then messaged or bought. Where did you lose most people?
    • If not many clicked: the problem is in the ad itself (the image or the text).
    • If they clicked and did not engage: the problem is in the destination or in matching the promise.
    • If they messaged and did not buy: the problem is in the reply, the offer, the price or trust.
  3. What change will I test? Choose one adjustment, apply it, and watch. To learn about the common mistakes that spoil the reading, see Mistakes that waste your paid ads budget.

When is a campaign "successful" and when "failed"?

Do not rush to label it. Some signs:

  • Generally a good campaign: achieves the wanted action at a cost you can afford, and you can repeat and improve it.
  • A campaign that needs adjustment: brings interest but turns weakly into orders, so its problem is often the destination or the offer.
  • A campaign that needs rethinking: brings no interest after careful adjustments, and its idea, its audience or the chosen platform may be unsuitable. See the article Google Ads or social media ads?

And remember that a campaign that did not bring sales is not completely a failure if you learned from it something that saves you bigger spending later.

What does a good report look like?

Whether you prepared it yourself or received it from a company, look for these elements:

  • The goal agreed at the start of the campaign.
  • The main indicators against the goal, written clearly.
  • What was spent and what resulted from it.
  • What worked and what did not, with a short explanation.
  • The suggested next step with its reason.

A report full of charts and numbers with no conclusion and recommendation is not a useful report.

Common questions

After how long do I judge the campaign?

The period depends on your case, your goal, the size of the audience and your budget. Do not judge in a very short time, because the platform learns gradually, and do not wait long without reviewing if the numbers are very far from what is needed.

What is the most important number to look at?

The number that expresses your goal: serious messages if you want contact, and orders if you want sales. After it comes the cost of this action compared with what comes back to you.

The ad brought a lot of engagement and no sales. What is the reason?

The audience may be unsuitable, or the ad catches attention but the offer does not convince, or the destination is weak, or the reply is late. Check the customer's journey step by step to find where it stops.

Are the numbers the platform shows enough?

They are a good starting point but do not cover everything, especially if sales happen by phone or in the shop. Add to them asking customers and recording orders.

In short

The success of an ad campaign is not a nice number on a screen. It is achieving a specific goal at a reasonable cost. Set your goal before the launch, choose the indicators that express it, ignore the numbers that shine without helping, ask your customers how they knew about you, and then take one considered decision after each reading.
